Following the close of the special session on safety, called by Governor Bill Lee, the Review asked State Representative Kirk Haston and Senator Ed Jackson to offer comments. Senator Jackson’s responses were published in the September 6, 2023 issue. Below are comments from Representative Haston:
“I was proud to have been a part of passing some incredible legislation to improve safety for all Tennesseans.
“In the special session we passed legislation that made our schools safer, that protected victims of stalking, but funded mental health evaluations for criminals, that made gun safes and gun safety devices tax free, that added funding to incentives for increasing mental health professionals in our state, while also adding $10 million for additional school safety grants.
“For the week’s time that we were called in, I felt like we passed some significant legislation that will have an immediate impact for good in our state, and I look forward to continuing the discussions and additional pieces of legislation for the upcoming session in 2024.
