FRED LEE HICKERSON

FRED LEE HICKERSON

Fred Lee Hickerson was born on November 27, 1932, in Linden, Tennessee, the son of the late Martha Pevahouse

Hickerson and Jake Hickerson. Fred Lee departed this life on August 6, 2023, in Waynesboro, TN at the age of 90. Private graveside services were held on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at the Rainey Cemetery. Young Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. On March 24, 1953, Fred was inducted in the Army and had basic training at Fort Eustis, VA. He was a Corporal with PMGC Motor Pool, at Camp Gordon, GA. He was discharged on March 23, 1955.In 1957, Fred married the love of his life, Edna Earle Rainey in Linden, TN. Together, they took over the Hickerson family grocery business. From a young age he dreamed of owning and building a supermarket. In 1978 his dream came true. Along with many years of hard work and endless hours in the business, Hickerson Grocery was awarded Honor Roll of Outstanding Independent Grocers in March 1985 in Progressive Grocer magazine. This was such an honor for him being from a small town. After years of consideration, he decided to go with the Piggly Wiggly franchise on April 2, 1991. This was another big milestone in his life. You couldn’t walk through the store without him giving children candy and joking around telling them to call him “Old Slick Head Fred.” He was always in search of a deal and made friends wherever he went. His family and friends will forever cherish the memories they shared with him while shopping. On May 5, 1993, Fred retired to be with Edna. They spent many wonderful years with family and friends at their summer home in the Peters Landing community. He delighted in boating and taking care of their river home. Fred loved nothing better than spending endless hours mowing the lawn. He was a member of the Linden First Christian Church where he served as a Deacon for many years. Fred and Edna were married for 65 years. He treasured every minute of every day with her. In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by his sisters, Alma Curtis, Illa Carroll, Mae Breece, Lucille Potts, and Nell Hickerson; brother, Ralph Hickerson; mother-in-law, Fronia Rainey; father-in-law, Earl Rainey; brothers-in-law, Curtis Anderson, Green Carroll, Edwin Patterson, Jimmy “Flea” Rainey, and Joe Rainey; and sister-in-law, June Rainey. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Edna Earle Rainey Hickerson; a daughter, Diana (Jimmy) Griggs of Linden; sister-in-law, Dorothy Patterson of Dickson; brothers-in-law, Alton “Buddy” Rainey of Waynesboro and Dale (Debbie) Rainey of Trussville, AL; and many special cousins, nieces, nephews and long-time friends, Marian and James Sloan, along with a host of other loving family members and many, many friends. The family would like to extend special thanks to Faye Greer, the staff of Boyd Cottage’s Assisted Living, Hall Medical, Waynesboro Health and Rehabilitation, Wayne Medical Center and Gentiva Hospice for their dedicated and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, drop a little extra money in the collection plate at any church of your choice in memory of Fred.
