The PCHS basketball season is in full swing with a two-night opener the Vikings and Lady Vikings hosted as Hall of Fame games.
The Lady Vikings got off to a slow start Friday evening, falling by 20 points to visiting Greenfield, but rebounded Saturday night with a win over Jackson Christian School.
Brook Warren scored 11 points in the contest to lead her Lady Vikings, and was the only player in double digits, five of those points coming at the charity stripe where she missed only one.
Other scorers were Kandra Starkey, 7; Sara Monroe, 6; and Alycia Simmons, Carson Trull, and Jerika Erskin with 4 points each.
The Lady Vikings trailed by only three at the end of one period, 14-17, but saw Greenfield take off in the second to lead 31-22 by the half. PCHS managed only 4 points in the third period as the game slipped away. The final score: 36-56.
Thanks to a huge first period on Saturday evening, the Lady Vikings jumped out to a 19-5 lead over JCS, and never relinquished the advantage.
Alycia Simmons connected for 20 points, including four from three-point range, to lead her team. Kandra Starkey and Brook Warren added 8 points each, while Carson Trull and Sara Monroe combined equally for the other 8 points in the 44-33 victory.
Two games and two wins mark the start of the Vikings 2009-2010 season. The first was a lopsided victory, 81-49 over Greenfield, but the second was a nail-biter—a two-point overtime win over JCS.
On Friday evening the Vikings scored 43 points in the first half to crush any hopes Greenfield might have had. PCHS added another 25 points in the third period alone.
Two Vikings—Cannon Rhodes and Will Averett—had more than half the team’s total points. Rhodes connected on seven 3-pointers in the game and finished with two dozen points, while Averett hit for 20 points.
Adding to the total: Dray Mercer, 14; Taylor Dill, 11; Blake Kimble, 4; and deuces by Christian Cunningham, Tim Thomas, Braden Bates, and Matthew Gilboy.
On Saturday versus JCS, the Vikings fought back from a 5-point deficit after one period of play to trail by only one point at the half, 30-31. After the break PCHS enjoyed a 26-point third period and led 56-48 going into the final period. At the end of four, the score was knotted. A couple of clutch OT free throws by Garrett Hill, and a 3-pointer by Cannon Rhodes sealed the win for the Vikings, 75-73.
Four Vikings were in double figures: Jacob Warnick and Dray Mercer each had 14 points, Christian Cunningham added 13, and Taylor Dill hit for 10. Cannon Rhodes had 7 points, and Blake Kimble had 5, followed by Matthew Gilboy and Will Averett with 4 each, and Garrett Hill’s two from the charity stripe.
PCHS hosted Waverly Monday evening, then traveled to Lewis County on Tuesday. Their next game, after the Thanksgiving break, is at Creek Wood on December 1.
